Heroes of Olympus – The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I have had these drawings finished for a while, but as I said in my previous post, I have had a very busy few weeks. I had a lot to do to prepare for this year’s Leeds/Scotland session of FSY and also my sister is getting married in 2 weeks so life has been a little hectic. I still haven’t quite recovered from FSY but I am getting there and this is the first time I have had the energy and drive to scan them in and upload them on here.

lost hero

So these are from the first book in the Heroes of Olympus series, The Lost Hero, written by Rick Riordan and it follows on from the events of the Percy Jackson series. Percy Jackson is missing and a new child of the big three turns up at Camp Halfblood and it becomes clear the two events are connected.

The first drawing is from when Piper, Jason and Leo all arrive at Camp Halfblood. Annabeth gives Piper a tour but it is clear her heart isn’t in it as her boyfriend, Percy, disappeared just over 3 days ago. She taked Piper to the cave of the Oracle of Delphi, who currently resides in Rachel Dare so they can talk about everything, including Jason, without a crowd. Annabeth almost breaks down in front of Piper as she is struggling to be a leader of the camp with the stress of looking for Percy.

The second is set during the aftermath of the battle at the Wolf House. After defeating Enceladus on Mount Diablo and rescuing Piper’s Dad, Piper, Leo and Jason must head to the Wolf House in Sonoma to free Hera and stop the giant Porphyrion from rising. Hera is freed and unleashed her divine form with the power of a supernova which destroys the enemy forces but Porphyrion rises and manages to escape. Jason is not so lucky. He looks on Hera in her divine form and is burnt up from the inside. Thalia demands Hera fix her brother but there is nothing that can be done.

Annabeth and Luke’s Story

These four drawings are from the final book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian. They are all part of Annabeth and Luke’s heart wrenching story and fit together so I chose four drawings instead of the usual two. It is such a tragic story but beautifully told by the genius author, Rick Riordan. If you enjoy these pictures, you should read the books. They really are fantastic

Apologies for the scanning. Some reason, the scanner didn’t pick the backgrounds up very well for the two drawing set in the Throne Room on Mount Olympus.

last olympian

The first is set before Luke and Annabeth arrive at Camp Half-blood. Luke and Thalia are homeless and constantly running from the monsters. They find themselves in an alley in Richmond where they find Annabeth who attacks them thinking they are monsters. Luke calms her down and gives her a knife and the promise that they were family and he would never hurt her.

The second is before the battle of New York. The Demigods of Camp Half-blood set up defenses around Manhattan and Percy and Annabeth visit the Throne Room of Mount Olympus. Hermes brings Annabeth a message from her mother Athena but things turn sour when Annabeth apologises for what happened to Luke. Hermes gets angry and threatens her, blaming Annabeth for Luke’s fate as she didn’t run away with him, resulting in him turning into Kronos

The third is set when Kronos approaches the Empire State Building. He throws Chiron into a wall where he is buried under rubble. Annabeth becomes so angry she attacks Kronos (in Luke’s body) but dislocates her arm in the process. Kronos tries to strike back with his scythe and Percy pulls her out of the way, but Annabeth fights back, shouting ‘I hate you!’ but Percy cannot tell if that was aimed at him or Luke.

The final one is at the end of the battle with Kronos. Olympus is falling and only Percy, Annabeth and Grover stand in Kronos’ way. After a long fight, Kronos is about to kill Percy when Annabeth stops him, catching his sword with the hilt of her knife. He hits her and his titan strength sends her flying where she breaks her arm. Annabeth, broken and bleeding tries to find Luke behind Kronos and reminds him ‘family, Luke. You promised.’ Here is goes full circle and Luke sacrifices himself to stop Kronos and save Annabeth.

Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

I’m having a Rick Riordan craze right now, reading all the books, so it seems that will be the subject of many of my upcoming drawings.

These are from the third Percy Jackson and the Olympians book, the Titan’s Curse, which is my favourite in the series. I love these books and would definitely recommend it for all age groups.

The first is set after the Hunters arrive at Camp Halfblood. The play the traditional game of Capture the Flag which the Hunters won. Percy didn’t stick to the plan and Thalia and Percy get into an argument. Being children of Zeus and Poseidon respectively, the argument doesn’t end well. Thalia shocks Percy, who then soaks Thalia with creek water which is followed by Thalia blasting Percy with a bolt of lightning.

The second is set when those on the Quest to rescue the goddess Artemis reach Mount Tamalpais, the new location of the Titan’s stronghold, Mount Othrys. After a brief fight, Artemis is rescued and Atlas is trapped back under the weight of the sky. In the fight, Luke is taken on by Thalia. Thalia manages to disarm Luke, he is backed to the edge of the mountain but Annabeth, despite being imprisoned by Luke, begs her to spare is life. Luke lunges for Thalia’s spear but she defends herself and he is kicked off the cliff.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

I have been rereading the Percy Jackson series recently as I haven’t read the books since 2015 when Heroes of Olympus finished. Naturally, I ended up wanting to draw it and settled on Sea of Monsters. If you like these, I would very much recommend giving all the Rick Riordan books a read. He is an absolute genius!

The first one is set after Percy, Annabeth and Tyson escape from Luke’s ship, the Princess Andromeda. They escape on a life boat using the winds from the four corners of the earth and end up in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. Annabeth directs them to a Halfblood hideout that she built when travelling with Luke and Thalia. She sends Tyson off on a pointless errand to find doughnuts so she and Percy can talk where they discuss Thalia and Cyclopes.

The second is from the end of the book. The quest to find the Golden Fleece and save Thalia’s tree and Camp Halfblood was successful. When Annabeth is on guard duty protecting the Fleece, they find it worked too well and it restored Thalia to human form giving Luke another chance to take control of the Great Prophecy.

Heroes of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Once again, sorry about the delay, but I’ve been busy with my placement. Anyway, here are my latest drawings from the third, fourth and fifth books in Rick Riordan’s ‘Heroes of Olympus’ series. As I’ve said several time, he is a really talented writer, bringing the old greek and roman myths and legends back into the modern day.

So this first one is from ‘The Mark of Athena‘ which is set at Fort Sumter. Annabeth has been chosen to find the Athena Parthenos to restore peace to both camps, but a complication occurs. Leo attacked the Romans with his war ship whilst possessed by a spirit, so the Romans are fighting back. and attack the 7 demigods from the prophesy at Fort Sumter. Reyna finds Annabeth, but ends up letting her go on her quest:

The second is set in ‘The House of Hades‘ in Jason’s dream. The Romans are in New York preparing the fight the Greeks because they were attacked. They are visited by the Greek Oracle, Rachel Dare, and her protector, Grover Underwood, who is on the Council of the Cloven Elders. Rachel tells Reyna that she must go to the ancient world to help restore peace by returning the Athena Parthenos (that was stolen by Romans millenia ago) and re-establish peace between the camps. Octavian is skeptical of Rachel’s power so she is forced to show it, glowing green:

The final drawing is from ‘Blood of Olympus‘ and is set in San Juan, where Reyna is originally from. She is escorting the Athena Parthenos back, along with Nico who is transporting them by shadow travel, and also Coach Hedge. They landed in San Juan, where Reyna has a dark secret, and Reyna is kidnapped. She wakes in a cell tied to a chair. When the door opens, she attacks her kidnapper, but is at a Stalemate, with 3 Hunters in her way, but she is holding a knife to their Lieutenant’s throat, Thalia Grace:

Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

Back to book three in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse. This drawing here has taken be 2 months, and nearly 100 hours with planning, drafting, drawing, fine-lining and colouring, and I am SOOOOO proud of it. It is unlike anything I have done before as it is A3 to get the gods at the appropriate sizes. Unfortunately, even with A3, I couldn’t fit Ares and Aphrodite in. I’ve done it as similar as possible to the descriptions given in the book. I hope you all love this as much as I do.

This is set after the fight on Mount Tam, and after Zoe Nightshade’s (Artemis’ Lieutenant) death. It is set at the council of the gods on the winter solstice….

WM - Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse - Thalia becomes Artemis' Lieutenant - 06.04.2015
Artemis and Annabeth have been freed and the demigods have made it to the council of the gods on the winter solstice. Once they get there, they discuss whether or not they should kill Bessie the ophiotaurus (which could be a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands). They also discuss the fates of Percy and Thalia who are demigods of the eldest gods, Poseidon and Zeus. Athena says they should be killed as they are too dangerous, but Artemis insists that they should reward the demigods who did the Olympians such a great service otherwise they are no better than the titans. In the end, they aren’t killed, and Thalia chooses to be Artemis’ lieutenant and become a Hunter, so that she would not turn sixteen the next day, and that the great prophecy would not be hers to fulfill. Here Thalia is making the Hunter’s Oath, to stay an eternal maiden.
